Things that make San Francisco pet photographer Jesse Freidin unique:
1. He’s male. Yes, I know… there are lots of men in the world. But the pet photography milieu seems to be rather female-dominated, so it’s cool to come across a male pet photographer… you know, like it’s cool to see a woman driving a steamroller or something. Not that a man shouldn’t be a pet photographer or a woman shouldn’t drive a steamroller — it’s just cool because it’s different. Geez, I’m starting to kind of sound like a jerk, aren’t I? Never mind. Moving on…
2. He has years of experience as a professional dog handler. These skills allow him a connection with his subjects that makes for natural, intimate, truly authentic images.
3. He’s old-school. In an increasingly digital world, Freidin shoots black-and-white film with a Hasselblad (drool), prints his own images by hand, and even makes his own mats and frames.
Says Freidin, “I love this hands-on process, and it brings a warmth and emotional weight to all my work… I love that spark and dedication that flows between dogs and people, and celebrate that with my images.” Yup.
