A whopping 16 brands of dog food were linked to potential heart disease in dogs today. The FDA report found they may lead to canine dilated cardiomyopathy which can result in heart failure. This usually affects larger breed dogs but some smaller ones have been affected too. Golden retrievers seem to be at most risk.
In any event, below is a list of the brands to take note of:
- Acana
- Zignature
- Taste of the Wild
- 4Health
- Earthborn Holistic
- Blue Buffalo
- Nature’s Domain
- Fromm
- Merrick
- California Natural
- Natural Balance
- Orijen
- Nature’s Variety
- NutriSource
- Nutro
- Rachael Ray Nutrish
These dog foods are labeled as grain-free and contain ingredients such as peas, lentils, and potatoes. The dogs studied had no genetic predisposition to heart problems.
The investigation began after the FDA received reports of dilated cariomyopathy in both cats and dogs. It is worth noting that only 560 dogs have been reported to the FDA with this condition. So while it is scary news, it doesn’t mean that if you’ve been feeding your dogs a diet high in those brands that they are going to develop problems.
