Kira Stackhouse, owner of and brains behind Scutte (pronounced “Scoot”), a new San Francisco-based dog apparel company, experienced profound dismay trying to find suitable clothes to keep her new puppy warm: “All I could find were novelty shirts saying ‘princess’ or ’stud’ or other outfits that were so over the top adorable/precious that it made me feel a little silly even thinking about buying them (since I am hardly a foo foo type),” she recounts on Scutte’s web site. Stackhouse instead starting making her dog’s clothes herself, creating new canine fashions from recycled T-shirts and sweats, and her new company was born.

Seriously? It’s like someone raided my college wardrobe, found things that may not fit quite right anymore (ahem…) and refashioned dog clothes out of them. Brilliant!

Here at phetched, we think Scutte is super cool for many reasons, including but not limited to:
1. Scutte endeavors to do green business – from using recycled materials (even the remnants) and striving to run a paperless office.
2. Scutte volunteers in the community on behalf of animal rescue organizations, which always earns an A+ in our book.
3. Scutte partners with and donates a portion of proceeds to Muttville, a Bay Area senior dog rescue organization. (All of Scutte’s canine models, including those above, are Muttville dogs. You can learn more about them here.)
4. Scutte’s dog clothes are wicked cool.
If you’re lucky enough to live in the SF area, you can find Scutte fashions at select local retailers, but for the rest of us, some Scutte products are available online from Scutte’s web site. (New items are being added daily, so keep an eye out!)
Scutte also takes custom orders (if you do still have those old favorite tees from college) and is offering free shipping on online orders until June 30th.
(If you haven’t entered our current giveaway yet, be sure to do that here.)
