July 15, 2010Blog the Change: Hot in Herrrre

Heyooo, pups! Today at phetched we’re participating in Blog the Change, which, in 25 words or less, is an effort by pet bloggers and Be the Change for Animals to spread the word about pet-helpful causes and organizations. (Is that less than 25 words? I didn’t count. But you can head to Be the Change to find out more.)

In thinking about what pet cause I’d like to pledge my support to, as I felt the welcome evening breeze blow into our non-air-conditioned house, the answer came quickly and easily:  I want to help you help me (thanks, Jerry Maguire) spread the word about the dangers to dogs and cats left inside hot cars. We all know the danger of leaving animals in cars on hot summer days, but apparently a lot of folks out there don’t, and they drive me to cussing on at least a weekly basis. And did you know that even temperatures that may be comfortable for you can become deadly for pets inside a parked car, even with the windows cracked? It’s true.

My Dog is Cool is a great resource with all kinds of information about the dangers to pets left in cars – including downloadable, printable flyers you can keep in your car to help spread the word.

I’m going to print some off for myself so I can spend less time cussing and more time Being the Change.

(P.S. – You can go to Blog the Change, scroll down the page, and find a list of links to other pet blogs that are blogging for change today.)

I hereby pledge to never leave my pooch in a hot car. I will also print some of these and slide them under some windshield wipers around town. Thanks for the inspiration, Phetched!

Hi! Found you on the blog hop today. Nice to meet you! Thanks for this info. We agree – no hotdogs in cars! We live in a super hot place and we see this a lot. We’ll print some and give ‘em to Mom and Dad when they go out on hot days!

This is a great cause to bring attention to for Blog the Change!!! It’s heartbreaking to hear how many dogs die because they’re left in a hot car… it’s so ridiculous! I’m going to print out a bunch of those, add a handwritten note (something like “Next time, I’ll call animal control.”) and keep them on hand!

Thanks Peaches, Road Dogs, and Maggie!

And Maggie, you bring up an important point… if you ever see a dog in immediate, severe danger in a hot car (i.e., already showing signs of distress), notify the manager of the store, if applicable, and call the police or animal control.

A flier! I LOVE that! I have thought about writing a bunch of angry swear words on a postIT and sticking them all over the offending car… but this flier idea is much less likely to get me fined/put in jail/whatever.

Thank you for letting us know about this!

Great idea! I HATE it when I see dogs sitting in cars in parking lots, especially on a hot day. LEAVE UR DOGS AT HOME! Yikes, people are idiots sometimes, I just wanna shake them. Visiting from the Blog the Change list!

Great reminder! It is easy to forget that dogs temperatures are higher than ours and a parked car can be dangerous. Thanks for being part of Be the Change. Good to meet you!

What a great idea with the flyers. I’m going to be printing some off and spreading them around my neck of the woods. (Where it can get pretty darn toasty!) Thank you for being part of the Be the Change.

I am also going to print these flyers and keep them in my car, to hand out! We just reported someone that had their black lab in the car on a 90 degree day with the windows cracked. Thanks for blogging for a change!

The flyers are definitely being printed and kept in my purse and car. I hate seeing dogs left in cars when it’s hot outside. And even if you’re parked in the shade with windows cracked it makes no difference, your dog is still suffering. I wish all human offenders could be punished by wearing a fur coat in a hot car for 15-20-40 minutes.. or even an hour. I’ve heard of people leaving their dogs in the car while they went to an amusement park! Horrid!!

Great cause! I’m going to print up some of those fliers. Great to “meet” you on Blog the Change.

Definitely a great cause! I had to call our local humane society just the other day because there was a lab left in the car & the windows weren’t cracked at all!! Poor dog. Some people just don’t think.

Great idea for Blog the Change, especially this summer. It’s so hot everywhere. No dogs in hot cars ever!

This is fabulous! No, seriously. This is FAB-U-LOUS. I’m firing up the printer right now.

Thank you for taking part in Blog The Change. The ideas being shared are inspiring, wonderful, and likely life-saving, given this flier. I’m STILL learning so much as we make the “thank you” rounds. You are just one more inspiration in a community of amazing animal people.

    All the best,
    Kim (and Amy by proxy)
